Thickly Painted Walls chooses her top 10 of 2011

1. Sonic Youth, "Simon Werner a Disparu" CD/LP/download

Considering the separation of Kim and Thurston, I like to pretend this is their real swan song, and how fitting it is., with no vocals.

2. Chineselightbulb, "grey leather" download

The smooth grey leather painted over your skin, glaze my eardrums with saliva.

3. Inés Navarro, "Lentes del condensador" download

what can I say? this album would freak me out and motivate me to record all at the same time, all while being comfortably relaxed laying down in a bed with blankets. Summer or winter.

4. JLK, "empty spaces" CS

read full review here: http://vacuumnoise.blogspot.com/2011/11/jlk-empty-spaces-los-discos-enfantasmes.html

5.. Prurient, "Bermuda Drain" LP/CS

Everything was on point for this release; the aesthetics, the weirdness, I'm glad it wasn't just another noise album. The cassette release offered some interesting demoes and other tracks.

"If I could, I would take a tree branch, and ram it inside you." Forever stuck in my brain.

6. Cities Aviv, "Digital Lows" download

its nice to hear good lo-fi rap that's new, I may not follow that scene so well but this release caught me by surprise birthday cake.

7. MCDX3 "the tape says..." CDr

The tape says... CD-R?! Say What! MCDX3 may become the next Bob Dylan via this release (too bad it was limited to 15 copies)... maybe not, but he didn't sell his soul to the devil, or...?

8. The Avant Garde of Sussex County, "Hope and Dreams Album" download

Joke?Harmonika beat Dr. Beanstock to it! Garageband itunes free mix!!

9. Velvet Chrome, "Anthology" CS

This tape is my cup of tea...

10. Wonder Wheel, "Total Bundy" CS/download

Just the bass heaviness in "deep in the bottle" is enough for me. The raw recordings are contrasted by effected vocals to make this release of the full band version of Wonder Wheel, wondrous.

JLK- Empty Spaces (Los Discos Enfantasmes) review

I'm opening my closet, I'm plugging in, digital crystal clear reel running along the grassy banks of the splashy agua field. I'm plugging in, I don't care, I'm doing it doing it now. Running down the hill, on the wooden skates, on my surfboard, waking walking. You ask why answer a question with a question? I don't know I say, its repeating though, its different too. The brown faux wood sticker pulsating speaker wound, catfound no cat. I'm trying, trying to figer it out, figer it out tiger. Locked in the closet now, cat out of the bag, quick n easy, forget about it smile, inoffensive and pensive

rock n roll waitress cowboy funk skunk trunk dunk skinny legs with the tight painted on jeans or stocking jukebox fuck DJ spinning krautrock all night and outta sight dancing blues and black burning hacky sack lou reed seizure heart attack no reason to not say that sound clicks off I hear my thought church bells ringing and video game screaming buzzer alert pacing honey comb behind that cockatoo walk in to the dungeon to get fucked mortal kombat contenders are along the sides glide into the center stage with the guitarra in hand demons encircle you and climb on in thru your temples and involuntary segovia death.

VNR NF 12 & 11

Sunday, September 11, 2011

Beautiful Van with a great face. Back then van's didn't have to look like an angry monster, or a dumb dog. We had one of these when i was little. In green van version. A beautiful volvo commercial with the guy from that great sitcom Soap. (although the "olympia" looks pretty nice too!~)
Another non-monster... and look how that baby bounces around!  I can't wait to be at the top of the heap.
The best part of this Camaro commercial is flying thru the tunnel of chevy logos. They just don't mak'em right anymore! Its awesome to see it drive through that Tim Burton wonderland.

well, the truth is that I receive this. is hard to imagine writing these songs, some very dark feelings show and not see you, boo and. that's great. surprise that fuels many fantasy ... it's so simple it's scary .. it's a record so complex, I expected something more noiser maybe, maybe not seeing the cover on vnrtapes.blogspot made me believe that the disc could be more sick of all but nothing to do, pure beauty and pop better. I think I'm stupid to be excited in sprees. I identify a lot with this but in other passages of the songs I really question "what's wrong with this boy?", no matter if something happens, I think your voice is more expressive than in years and just listen to this album is one that I like because a lot of vocals and guitar, which is also verbose. perhaps also be able to walk and other things, various.

T-PC in Northvale, NJ review

Overpriced and incompetent... unhelpful and smells like cigarette smoke. T-PC in Northvale NJ is one of the worst computer stores one could go to. They are unfriendly, stubborn, and ignorant. You would be better off doing your own research than having them do anything on a computer for you. Please go elsewhere and save yourself from wasting your time, unless you like annoying idiotic sales people and the smell of cigarette smoke with overpriced junk lingering all over the store as if it was a bodega.

napkume review

Napkume Review

Napkume is a mood sensitive listening experience. I listened to it once and I really couldn’t figure out its raison d'etre. After the second time, I still didn’t know; But I also didn’t care.

The CD-R starts out sounding like a mediocre 90’s demo tape. Psycho People has a nice melody but also tests the limits of your patience with dumb sonic youth noise guitar. It all depends on if you have a taste for it. The repetition of the track will eventually infect you, trust me.

Track 2 @Airport also relies on a catchy hook. It doesn’t really repeat, though it is pleasent enough though.

From there the album sometimes delves slightly into a more electronic slow spaces like exploring a computer filled with peanut butter, but its just a trick because through exploring, itunes evidently is found and the tracks change alot within themselves in tempo & technique.

This is a very fufilling, captivating body of music when re-listening, but i dont know whether i should be concerned that I wasn’t very interested the first time around.

7 & 8 Are the funniest tracks.

VNR Newsflash 5

Pac-Man and Tod Frye (info taken from wiki and youtube)

Pac-Man (Atari 2600)

  • Based on an unfinished prototype in an attempt to release by the holiday season of 1981.[16]
  • Contained many differences from the arcade version due to the limitations of the console, such as flickering monsters and lower-quality sound effects.[16]
  • 12 million copies were produced, even though only 10 million Atari 2600 consoles had been sold.[17]
  • Along with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, it has been cited as a significant factor in the 1983 video game industry crash.[18]"
"The Pac-Man port was started in May of 1981, and was the most anticipated release for 1982, so marketing pressed Frye to produce the game on a very strict timetable (in the early 1980's lead times on the cartridge ROMs was several months, so the code needed to be completed in September 1981 to get the product into stores in Q1 1982). Atari corporate management demanded Frye complete the game in the standard 4K ROM, despite his repeated requests that 8K of ROM be allocated. Confined by time and available memory, Frye proposed the unthinkable. He approached Atari CEO Ray Kassar, and suggested a royalty agreement. Frye threatened to quit Atari and join Activision, leaving Pac-Man unfinished and Atari without its benchmark title. Kassar rewarded Frye with an unprecedented royalty agreement, having no other option. If the game was completed on schedule, it was agreed a royalty of 10 cents be retained for each Pac-Man cartridge manufactured.[1] Atari would manufacture 12 million Pac-Man cartridges, making Frye a millionaire in the process."

Capsule Review of the song Cabeza fresca by Ines Navarro.

You are in your room banging to rubber beats while Death Mother speaks to you from beyond the grave.

You visit her at the cemetery. Instead of mourning quietly you find yourself abducted by aliens and transported to a black and white recreation of the cemetery. You die from misery & solitude.

JLK- Cold City Country

old middle aged young men, driving down the highway in a big old boat car.

"Don't change the radio station, you know that slider glider; you wanna die (ride)."

" Nah man I'm fucked up, fucked up."

I am dreamin' a bit and slippin' too. Laying down on the cement and tripping on that fabric, that hangs off the tablecloth.

warm brown murky navajo indian medicine man taking my hand now.

we sing a lot drunk and slipping and skipping down to the abandoned supermarket just so we can play darts. We are repeating our day to day man.

Spider crawling up my leg, daddy long legs style.

snuck into the liquor cabinet and now I am a spinning. scraping my knees on the gravel, feeling my bones against my bones and muscles and insides- some blood comes out, slid down the dirty rib cage of the woods, on my bicycle over the rubber, onomonopia.

tree roots grow out of the ground, I forgot where I was driving.

I'm in a jazz club, there is cigarette smoke everywhere, there are some sound coming from somewhere, no one is there, I am sitting at a table in the dark and no one is on the streets outside either.

But then comes along the trolley car firetruck to scare off everyone away.

I'm losing my mind

Saturday, January 22, 2011

First up, McGRUFF. After listening to 20 minutes of retarded joke music, I was expecting more of the same. So I was a little surprised to find that THE WHEN McGRUFF WAS KING play actual songs. Actually it’s still retarded joke music, it’s just a little more charming this time around. TWMcGWK kind of reminds me of early PAVEMENT if they were completely wasted(er?) and brain damaged (not in a good way). However, I’d be surprised if these kids had ever even heard of PAVEMENT. In reality, they probably just raided their parents liquor cabinet and then tried to play rock & roll while running a tape recorder. The end of their second song does get a little ‘experimental’. It’s kind of like a less fucked, more adolescent version of THE DEAD C.
