Everything was on point for this release; the aesthetics, the weirdness, I'm glad it wasn't just another noise album. The cassette release offered some interesting demoes and other tracks.

its nice to hear good lo-fi rap that's new, I may not follow that scene so well but this release caught me by surprise birthday cake.

Beautiful Van with a great face. Back then van's didn't have to look like an angry monster, or a dumb dog. We had one of these when i was little. In green van version.A beautiful volvo commercial with the guy from that great sitcom Soap. (although the "olympia" looks pretty nice too!~)
Another non-monster... and look how that baby bounces around! I can't wait to be at the top of the heap.
The best part of this Camaro commercial is flying thru the tunnel of chevy logos. They just don't mak'em right anymore! Its awesome to see it drive through that Tim Burton wonderland.

Napkume Review

Napkume is a mood sensitive listening experience. I listened to it once and I really couldn’t figure out its raison d'etre. After the second time, I still didn’t know; But I also didn’t care.

The CD-R starts out sounding like a mediocre 90’s demo tape. Psycho People has a nice melody but also tests the limits of your patience with dumb sonic youth noise guitar. It all depends on if you have a taste for it. The repetition of the track will eventually infect you, trust me.

Track 2 @Airport also relies on a catchy hook. It doesn’t really repeat, though it is pleasent enough though.

From there the album sometimes delves slightly into a more electronic slow spaces like exploring a computer filled with peanut butter, but its just a trick because through exploring, itunes evidently is found and the tracks change alot within themselves in tempo & technique.

This is a very fufilling, captivating body of music when re-listening, but i dont know whether i should be concerned that I wasn’t very interested the first time around.

7 & 8 Are the funniest tracks.

First up, McGRUFF. After listening to 20 minutes of retarded joke music, I was expecting more of the same. So I was a little surprised to find that THE WHEN McGRUFF WAS KING play actual songs. Actually it’s still retarded joke music, it’s just a little more charming this time around. TWMcGWK kind of reminds me of early PAVEMENT if they were completely wasted(er?) and brain damaged (not in a good way). However, I’d be surprised if these kids had ever even heard of PAVEMENT. In reality, they probably just raided their parents liquor cabinet and then tried to play rock & roll while running a tape recorder. The end of their second song does get a little ‘experimental’. It’s kind of like a less fucked, more adolescent version of THE DEAD C.

3 Sins of Free Music and How to Fix Them

I'm the worst person to write this article. During my tenure as manager and recording artist for the netlabel New Bird Landowner, I've commited all three of the following sins. But if I don't write this, who will? Someone must state the obvious.
Free Music sucks. The shit passing for free music nowadays could suck boulders through a tiny tube.
We don't want to admit that we failed - that after a whole decade, our only accomplishment is keeping this shit off of CDs as not to clutter landfills. But we can't pretend like our music reflects well on the utility of Free Culture. We've failed to make music with staying power. Until we do, the public won't support Free Culture, and copyright law will never change.
It's painful to admit, but necessary to confess. So with my sin stained hands, I type these three crimes of Free Music and my strategies for suction reduction.
It's all ambient.
Excuse me, but what
THE FUCK is ambiental?
There's nothing wrong with ambient music. There's also nothing wrong with Fiddle Faddle. But if I had nothing but Fiddle Faddle to eat for the rest of my life, I'd tie myself a good strong noose.
Electronic musicians Nerds have stuffed free music collections with ambient music, IDM, and something called "electronica," which, as far as I can tell, is slang for music that no one can enjoy. Ambient and electronic already top the Jamendo tag cloud, and as of last Saturday, 3,001 free albums had ambient tags in the Internet Archive. This makes free music sites heaven for techno-snobs. Yet if the Free Music movement hopes to attract anything more than a niche audience, it must offer more variety.
Remedy:Electronic music's popularity online shouldn't surprise anyone. You don't need fancy equipment to make it. You don't need to learn an instrument to get started. Thanks to the Internet and Free Culture, you don't even need fans or a record deal. Free audio software and music blogs take the place of three chords and the truth, and now everyone's an "artist".
And what's wrong with that? Don't we rely on amateurs to take the risks professionals fear taking? Don't computer companies start in some schmo's garage? Yes. Fuck yes. And I thirst for daring, digitally liberated hacks to usurp the future of music from the depraved despots who dare call themselves "musicians". But not if it means even less variety than what the big four push for. Not if it means a choice between "Ambient" and "Electronica".
So how does a populist music uprising put out such uninspiring garbage?
Perhaps the electronic music fan's obsessive-compulsive tendencies to mince music into microscopic, nearly identical subgenres encourages cooking sub-culturally correct music from recipies (hypnotic dance beat + squelched 303 + "trippy" dialog = Yeah, you're fuckin' Infected Mushroom now!). Musicians have always looked to the past for examples of what music can sound like. Today, electronic musicians can look to the Wikipedia entry for dubstep to learn the precise tempo-range used in dubstep and which LFO settings will make that same wobble sound in every fucking dubstep song (least the new ones, anyhow).
Well stop it! Electronic music can sound like whatever you want it to sound like.
We've made music with our hands and lungs for the last few millennia. Electronic music is still soaked with afterbirth. We haven't even begun to exhaust the possibilities of synths and samplers. So why have we surrendered to the stereotype that electronic music must merely pivot between hyperactive dances and repetitive drones?
Don't let the tools used to make your music define what it has to sound like. If Derek Bailey played the guitar like a guitar, would anyone still give a fuck about Derek Bailey?
You're an amateur. You don't have to worry about selling tickets or pressing CDs. You can afford to take risks. Instead of sounding like every other ambient artist, take a chance on a new sound. Maybe it's ambient done your way. Maybe it ain't ambient at all.
And would it kill you to make some music with your hands once in a while? Synthesizers ain't the only instrument... Just the best.

My name is David McDevitt. I record music & perform as MCDX3.

My friend Stefan Walz (Thickly Painted Walls) told me you may be interested in hearing my newly completed album in consideration for releasing it under your Misspelled Records label.

This would be very interesting to me because of the opportunity to expose my work to a new group of people. Violet Saliva would be my 10th release, most of which have been through our VNR label with the exceptions of one thru Hobo Cult in Montreal and one thru You Dont Like It in Allston MA.

This album differs from some of my others in that it had a looser recording process where the songs were recorded with less of a predetermined intention to make one body of work. Although it wasn't a conscious decision, most if not all of the songs have some element of covering or sampling, or direct referencing to songs of other people.

primarilly we are a net-label.
a net label works in less traditional means to a label, cutting out physical publishing deals, and allowing the material to be released freely at no cost.
if you want to release your music for free we can provide you exposure, not limited to marketing online/offline, radioplay, possible cdr releases.

Not channel surfing, but distraction while watching TV.
Like you're drawing while watching TV. Playing with toys while watching TV. You know like you're half watching, half paying attention. I remember doing that more when i was young. I would usually be very involved in what i was doing, but sometimes I would be half involved in 2 different things at the same time.

Multiple subsequent endings then meandering middle with a low bassy climax and then either an ending or a beginning

Heartbeat liquid in veins. Again more thinking, but like in & out of the brain. I am you and I am the viewer back and forth very quickly, listening & speaking. But less thinking about the present this time, more reflective or unconscious memory. I don't know what all that empty space is about but i keep finding myself getting up from my chair shortly before and then getting startled at the silence.

There's no mystery that the guitar has been an instrument of derision within the experimental scene, and that this CD with its recognizably pianistic guitar sounds of strumming and vocal's is in a dimension, a kinda Syd Barret toning way. It is the musical picture of a musician looking toward the future, or could it be the past, one has to think for a moment.
This is indead a very interesting album full of "i guess" improvisations where all kinds of folk, avant styles come together, they meet and clash in their own very distinct way.
Nearly every track sticks to one formula, some slightly catchy guitar chords played over a nice chorus. The tempo's bleed well and individually, it's all pretty good.
Worth a listen to fans of kitchy guitar.

Re-listening to Boy from MCD was an enjoyable and fluctuating narrative bookended by thoughtful and purposeful sound samples from god knows what. Is it a home movie, a cartoon, a found tape? Folky, abstract, conceptual, pan-aesthetic, bouncing between sarcasm and sincerity. Maybe somewhere else; a place which all tones and styles are open to cause multi-directional intercourse. Quite otherworldly at times but still friendly. Emotionally vulnerable but brave and conscious. Automatic, quick-witted and when necessary, determined. Simultaneously noisy yet seismically peaceful, lyrical and symphonic, formalized yet content driven and punctual. There is pretty much every binary here canceling themselves out to reveal an immanent being beyond war, reveling in wholeness and while ultra sensory, clarity. The guy can take any beat, tone, style, affect and sculpt it into something which even the most ADD infected personality could vibe on. This is the beautiful sound of acceptance. A damn good release in which anyone who actually listens to sound in an artful manner knows this is a cosmology all on its own.

Wichsen Vixen from Thickly Painted Walls is a very interestingly cathartic and angular confessional release. Somber and in a cool way destitute, though very detailed frequencies and articulated tones; completely honest, wispy as hell. Hysterical in a quiet kind of way creating tensions with texture and withheld aggression. On the brink of being terminal. Some very sharp sounds right in your ear. Tone, textural variance, melody, and string work acknowledge some serious sensitivity regarding his ability to paint sound with an impressive varied vernacular of the guitar proper. Good audible lyrics and nice vocal extremities. Unabashedly direct emotionally while still having some abstract moments to lose yourself in. Quality release that takes place in the space which most people cowardly stay away from. To be honest, this release takes place in such a real and immediate time, words to describe it are pretty much futile. It's all in the music.

Abjures from the mysterious J Qosa is new and exciting. Love love love the artwork and see and hear some serious future potential for this artist, not to say that this album right here is not great, but it is getting me excited for more, leaving me with a taste still in my throat for something on the rise to experimental heaven. I love the simultaneous distance and closeness this release has and its sense of process, as well as its volume swelling and dimming. Excellent minimalism and actually pretty fucking weird moments. Barely there Sci-fi free jazz? Cyber vocal emotion sequencer? New music chinese man? Electro acoustic mexican dancer? Folk poet submarine conductor? What the hell is this actually? A sense of intended blanks, starts and stops, in your ear abstract lyrics which convey a place beyond functional language; strange pathos stumbling around. Plucked nerves, atmospheric static, appropriated affections, mental collage simplicity. Very in the here and now, somewhat non-illusionistic, and even zooms out to reveal an observation from out the window. Quotidian lost connection. Sparks of enlightenment disappearing before hitting the ground, noticed only by fellow patients. This stuff is great. Please more.

German's Stalking is both automatic and edited considered feedback, cut-ups, instrument destruction, thrash, and pure electronics. Nice booklet of personal predatory visions of stalked out internet humanoids. Washed out, chaotic, pulsing, and strangely surreal and unique in terms of pure noise. Swirls of frequencies and primal energy mixed with a pathos of frenzy and paranoia. This is raw, mysterious, and only the introduction of a project worth keeping an eye on. There are moments of otherworldly abstractions as well as complete disregard for sense or listenability. There is sensitivity in harshness, consideration in frenzy. Architectural, conceptually concise, perverted, and sometimes beautifully exotic. If this were an island you'd be glad it was only 20 minutes, yet 20 minutes in reality may be infinite when your dreaming. Hopefully you never wake up, and all the people you have been mentally stalking are there to join you in your decadent fantasies come true. Memory is forever.

And there it is. VNR is obviously where it is at. The true. The rare. The uncompromised. The unknown. The real fucking deal. The shit you read about 30 years too late. The Individual

For the Love of Treble: A Short Story Broken Down from Blankets & Covers from the 60s
Echo Mastianchi was always very adept at using his wits. He got out of a lot of tough situations in school. As a matter of honor he never let anything get him down. In addition to being the wittiest child in school he was also the most high strung.
What lurked inside his head was a frozen imprint of static stuck there after being trapped in a playpen in front of a TV with bad reception for 7 hours when he was 18 months old.
Down on the sidewalk one day Echo Mastianchi was kneeling down to try and get a pebble unstuck from his sneaker tread when a car rushed by blaring music that he found reprehensible. He quickly got the pebble unstuck and tossed it at the car hitting it’s rear window and making a small crack. This went unnoticed by the driver of the car.
Eleven months later that crack had grown much larger. The driver didn’t have enough money to replace the window. Coming home from the supermarket one day he hit a pothole and the window shattered. The driver was finally forced to do something about the window. He had to put the cost of the replacement on his credit card.
